Most of the controls for Legend are self explanatory. Keyboard movement uses the keypad. You can also choose mouse controls from the menu bar.
8: Up
4: Left
2: Down
6: Right
5 or Spacebar: Fire
The diagonal directions '1', '3', '7', and '9' are also available. Alternatively, you can use the keys surrounding the 'S' to move. i.e. 'W': Up 'A': Left etc. These are the keys used on a powerbook.
The four keys on the main control panel (the stone looking buttons on the right side of the main screen) correspond to PLAY, PAUSE, QUIT, and HELP. These functions are also available from the menu.
This is a typical dungeon game. Move, get treasure, and fire at the monsters. The bar in the control panel on the right shows your current health. This is always going down and will decrease quite a bit if you get hit. The bar will start flashing red to let you know your health is low. When it reaches zero the game is over.
The object of the game is to stay alive and complete each level by reaching the stairway (or other exit) of each level. Often the exits are behind locked gates; you must find the corresponding key to unlock the gate and proceed.
To restore your health you must eat the red apples. These will pump up your strength. The Super Apples will pump your strength up to the maximum. There is also an ice cream cone that will appear every 10,000 points. The ice cream will also pump your strength up to maximum.
If you own a large monitor, please set the colors to 256. Also you need to increase the amount of memory available to the program. If you own a big monitor you probably have a big computer, just set the memory to 3000K or better (using Get Info from the finder) and don't worry about wasting memory.
The deal:
Legend is $15 dollar shareware. I'm doing a little experiment into shareware so please help me. Legend currently ends around level 12 or so... I don't have time to make more levels, but i might be persuaded to do so if enough interest is shown... If you really can't afford the $15 dollar fee, i am asking a $5 contribution to encourage me to make the next version 1.5 of this game. I have many more levels and bigger worlds that i have not completed; help me buy a new hard drive and i'll get to it immediately.
If you do not pay for this program, you may pass it on to your friends provided you include this text file, but please remove Legend from your hard drive within 30 days. Please be honest.
If everybody contributed to shareware we would all have a lot of good inexpensive games instead of having to pay forty bucks for a decent game. I'm wondering if even 100 people in the whole world will actually send in money. Statistics say otherwise, but please prove my guess wrong. So many people copy software without paying for it and then complain "there aren't good games for the Mac." (hmmm why is this?)
So if you like Legend and and want to see more mac games please send money. $5 dollars is less than a movie nowadays and less than the sleaziest commercial software in the discount bin.
If you really like the program, then you can send in the full $15(I prefer this and it's still less than commercial software). I'll put your name on the Premium List and you will be eligible for any major upgrades for a one year period. You will receive any upgrades before anybody else and be eligible for hint letters and clues. You will not receive junk mailings and your address will only be used for the purpose of Legend upgrades.
Enjoy!
Please include your name, address, email address(optional), current version of your software, and $.

History:
Actually i created Legend long ago. It was my first program on my Macintosh IIsi. I never intended to distribute it and i played with it for a while then put it away. When i got my powerbook i played with it again when i used to ride the train into San Francisco. I added a new level every now and then and then i put it away again. I just got a modem in the past few months so i decided to put it online and here it is.
Undoutedly the title will be considered a plagiarism of the title 'Legend of Zelda' by Nintendo. Actually my title 'Legend' predates 'Legend of Zelda' by about a year and no similarity was intended. (Neither is any similarity intended with the automobile by Acura nor the television show on UPN staring Richard Dean Anderson.) The princess Lori predates princess Zelda by about 20 years.
